Oh yeah...this one! This is the start of a "legendary" album that nobody has heard (for the most part..."Jungle Fever Blisters" from Dance of the Dead and "Burnt Man Blues" from our Baked Goods album originated from these sessions) called Frowny Frown. Now, we've often made references to being huge Beach Boys fans (heck, that can be gleamed just from these notes). With that in mind, I strongly recommend looking up the details on how their Smiley Smile album was recorded, as Frowny Frown was intended to be our version of the exact same thing (right down to the "vibe"). Never completed ( thanks to a rather large amount of samples from various sources from The Simpsons to Hulk Hogan that were used throughout these songs), Frowny is quite possibly the weirdest collection of songs we've yet recorded. Recorded in October 2002 through mid December, many of the songs were recorded in a span of a single week, in all day sessions (literally from dusk til dawn in some cases). That may sound like a lot of songs...and you'd be right! How much music was there? Well, enough to slightly surpass the length of this entire set! Hmm...maybe at some point there will be a special collection devoted just to these sessions. Time will tell...
"Evil Mindy" is a prime example of how these sessions went. Dana and I were working at the time as door-to-door sales people, signing people up for an electricty company. One of our co-workers, Mindy Robinson, was a younger (by a few years) co-worker that would hang out with us after work. One day, we'd had a party afterwards and had some people over. Now, the day turned out, um, "not the best", but for the purpose of this collection (and my sanity), we'll discuss just the music. While everyone else was eating food from Taco Cabana (not a sponsor), Raymond began working on music. Mindy was "feeling pretty good" at the time (as were we all....) and asked if she could join in. This was the result, one of only two songs featuring an outside collaborator. Raymond came up with the intro (which Dana then added a bass part) , Mindy did the vocals and backing piano part, and I did the final section...
In an alternate universe, Mindy would've made a great addition to the band, but there were other factors in play, and that was not to be.
